Guidance Over References: A Smarter Way
Guidance Over References: A Smarter Way
This simple yet powerful statement came from one of our program alumni during a recent guest talk, and it really struck a chord with me. It highlights a mindset shift that’s especially important for graduate students preparing to transition into the professional world.
As students in the Master of Engineering in Internetworking program at Dalhousie University, you're gaining in-depth technical knowledge in areas like network architecture, design, security, switching, routing, telecom, protocols, algorithms, programming, network automation, and emerging technologies. But preparing for your career goes beyond technical skills — it’s also about learning how to engage with the professional community.
Too often, students feel hesitant about using LinkedIn and similar other professional platforms, unsure of what to say or how to approach people. The key is this: don’t use LinkedIn to ask for a job — use it to ask for insight.
🔹 Ask professionals what
skills helped them succeed in your field of interest
🔹
Reach out to alumni to learn how they made the leap from university to industry
🔹
Seek advice on certifications, tools, or trends in networking and tech
🔹
Be curious, not transactional — genuine learning builds genuine relationships
One thoughtful message can open the door to mentorship, career advice, and long-term connections. People are often more willing to help than you think — especially if you're respectful of their time and clear about your interest in learning.
This is how you build professionalism: not just by what you know, but by how you grow.
Make LinkedIn and other such platforms part of our learning journey — not a last resort when job hunting, but a proactive tool for becoming the professionals you aspire to be.
👏 Thank you to the alum who shared this wisdom — your words will continue to inspire many in our community.
